This is a bit of a tangent, but it worked so well I think I have to share it I had heard that hot pepper - cayenne pepper powder - works well to deter squirrel from digging up bulbs in the garden. The "heat" of the pepper is very uncomfortable for their little paws! When I moved to a new apartment last winter, I knew that there were blinds of a type that one of my cats really loves to chew - and I thought to preemptively coat the edges of the blinds in cayenne pepper, pasted on with a bit of water, to deter her.
