» Cottage_Garden - cutworms grubs you name it

In response to large worms with 6 legs by head what are these? posted by zspirit:
Based on your description, all I can tell you for sure is that they are caterpillars or grubs of some kind. Here is a discussion of the many different types of caterpillars with six legs. Here's info on June beetles -- beetle grubs also have six legs.
Since you are finding them in the soil they might be cutworms or beetle grubs of some sort. You'll know you have a cutworm problem if your seedlings are being sliced off at ground level. In the garden you can protect transplants from cut worms by putting a collar around each stem using tin foil or cardboard. Or, you can insert a wooden matchstick alongside the stem so the worm can't cut through it.
Beetle grubs can sometimes damage plant roots. In the garden can be disturbed by light hoeing and brought to the surface where you can squash them or birds can eat them. Or you can treat the soil with beneficial nematodes....
But, unless you really have a lot of them there may not really be anything to worry about. I hope this helps.
