» Cottage_Garden - Growing Amaryllis

In response to Growing posted by Nanas36:

Hi! Some varieties will send up foliage before the bloom stem. But it sounds like your bulb is just growing foliage this time, and no blooms. That means it did not have enough energy to bloom this time. The forcing process is hard on bulbs, so sometimes they take a year off and just grow leaves while they are building their strength. It sounds like yours may be doing this. It will probably bloom next year just fine. (Most amaryllis will bloom every year with good care though.)

Make sure you are giving it ample sunshine. Fertilize regularly when it is growing the foliage. You might try setting it outside during the summer, in a spot with morning only sun or bright dappled light all day.

Some bulbs will begin to die back naturally in the fall, while others will keep going. A few are evergreen and actually do not need that forced rest period -- Papillo is one. When you rest it, leave the foliage on until it is dried up. Rest it for about 8 weeks and bring it back into growth.

Check out more tips on amaryllis.

I hope this helps!
