» Cottage_Garden - Poll or Survey Results
I started a "Why DO You Garden?" survey -- one question, one answer -- just for fun. If you missed it, go to the Flower Gardens home page and scroll allllll the way down to the bottom, on the left. Make sure you click through at the end so your vote counts.
Do the gardener poll or survey results so far seem realistic to you?
I am surprised by how many people garden for exercise as the main reason.... although I know it IS great exercise!
Anyhoo, keep those answers coming -- the results so far are pretty interesting, I think you'll agree.

» Cottage_Garden - Exercise Benefits of Gardening
In response to Poll or Survey Results posted by Cottage_Garden:
Hmmm. Early poll results show a big majority of folks gardening for exercise or for healthy reasons.
Now, it seems like the hobby gardeners have started to vote so the passionate, dedicated, addicted category votes have increased dramatically.
I love watching the poll results, don't you?!

- I Garden so Deer May Nosh
I began gargening out of the joy of making things grow, and as a tribute to may Dad, who was unhandiest man I've ever seen, but could grow roses to die for. Somewhere along the line, it stopped being fun, and became harsh physical labor, especially since the only flowers that have really done well are cone flowers, which supposedly do not appeal to deer, but in my yard, they do. I just renamed my yard Cramer's Buffet, and face the other way when I sit on my screened porch!

I hear ya! Cramer's Buffet must be just down the block from "Barb's Deli, Now Open" ... the first winter we lived in Pennsylvania the deer came in herds of 20. Not much left after that. Made it a little frustrating until we put up a big tall fence. Even then they would get through once in a while.
One horrible icy and snowy and miserable winter they were so hungry they ate daffodils, the universally cited "flower deer will NOT eat" ... they ate yew in vast quantities, too, also poisonous, and devoured all juniper branches within reach in garden, woods and fields.
Not to mention being worried about Lyme's disease.... gardening with deer is not restful, not one little bit, no.

» Cottage_Garden - Latest Poll or Survey Results
In response to Poll or Survey Results posted by Cottage_Garden:Over half of the respondents garden for fun, hobby, passion, compulsion or addiction. It's always nice to know I am not alone. Whew! Thank you for answering that one!
Over a fifth of the answers (21%) picked sanctuary, refuge, escape. Oh yeah. Unlike kids, plants don't talk back! In fact, plants don't talk at all. It's quiet out there. And of course, the garden is a nice relaxing place to be, doesn't get any simpler than that.
Then about 14% answered you garden based on it being healthy, exercise, fresh air kind of a thing. I can definitely understand that, gardening is the ONLY form of exercise that doesn't seem like a punishment exercise to me except maybe for playing tennis.
For those 11% of you who just say nooooo, hate to garden and/or look at it as a must-do kinda chore thing, I have a little adice for you: Go condo! Or maybe try apartment living -- it's all taken care of for you.
To everyone who answered, thank you for participating in this informal survey. It's so much fun to watch the results come in.
If you haven't answered the poll yet, you better do it quick because it won't be there forever. No time like the present. (grin)
