I thought you may be interested in the results of my recent experiment growing amaryllis bulbs on a tipple of vodka: The plants were shorter and stronger. I blogged about it here with photographs and a stop motion movie .

Are the flowers the same size on both of the red ones? The one on the left looks overall smaller?

The red lion blooms, in the experiment, were in deed proportionally smaller on alcohol. But another I grew at home on 7:1 vodka:water from day one and then switched to 100% just before it bloomed is as big as they should be and has SIX trumpets on it, not just the usual four or five. You can see it, second photo down, on this page of my blog. It looks like a bonsai amaryllis, except for the flowers! Harry Brindley
