» Cottage_Garden - how far apart to plant paperwhite bulbs
In response to paperwhites posted by JoAnn32:
I believe it is intended to maintain good air circulation between the bulbs and so reduce the chance of the bulbs rotting during the forcing process. It might also have to do with the foliage needing enough "air space" above ground -- it tends to splay out a bit as it extends and the bloom stems come up.
Now, keep in mind you can put them pretty close together -- almost touching. They should be close together to make a nice generous display when they bloom.
You do not need to space them six inches apart or more the way you would plant daffodil bulbs in the ground, that's for sure.
And, (ssshhhh don't tell!) but I should mention some people do plant them so close that they touch. It also seems to work out just fine.
So, try it and see how it works for you. That's how a lot of gardening is, everyone has their own way of doing things.
I hope this helps... For more information on how to grow and bloom paperwhites, please see my article on How to Grow Paperwhites.
