Do you ever wonder where the plants you purchase actually come from? You buy them at the retail nursery, but very often the plants were grown by a wholesale grower and brought in for sale. Most likely you won't know the name of the company that grew the plants and the plants may have been shipped a long distance to reach your local retail store.
It can be interesting to take a look at the wholesale companies and see how they have grown or evolved over time. I recently tripped over a very entertaining back issue (late fall 2003!) of a newsletter from Twixwood, a wholesale grower. (They have more recent issues on their web site as well.) Somehow it had me laughing out loud, maybe because I have worked for plant nurseries in years gone by. That lead me to take a look at the Twixwood Nursery history. Wow!
The scale of commercial plant production is incredible when you stop to think about it. Somewhat akin to how grocery store food gets from the field to the table following our modern day production methods. You almost have to wonder if it was ever touched by human hand. And yet here we are gardening at home, tending our little gardens, enjoying the smell of our flowers and harvesting the little veggies.
I think, or I hope, most growers take pride in producing a good quality product. Does your local plant retailer grow their own or buy the plants from a wholesale nursery such as Twixwood? Can you tell where the plants came from or how they were produced?
