As I watched the Rose Bowl Parade (aka Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Parade) on television this morning, I couldn't help noticing how many of the parade floats were built by commercial float companies and how many included, to my taste, too few roses. Don't get me wrong, the float designs were all just gorgeous and colorful and festive and well suited to a parade appearance and I totally love that so many different groups and entities enter their floats to celebrate the day.
But, apart from the roses engulfing the Bayer Advanced float entitled "Salute to the Rose Parade" -- which carried numerous real-life Rose Queens and was the prize winner once again for best use of roses and showcased the two new award winning roses for 2008 (The world debut of the 2008 All-America Rose Selections(TM) winners for best roses of the New Year - Dream Come True and Mardi Gras) -- sadly there weren't all that many roses in the parade.
Multiple mentions of flowers used on the floats include statice, strawflower, mums, carnations, marigold petals, the occasional iris and even those lovely pearlescent lunaria seed pods. But roses did not seem to be the main flower of the day. That's a shame.
Does it matter? What's in a name, or a parade logo for that matter...
