I recently read a slim little illustrated booklet called "The Fairy Home Companion" compiled by The Essential Herbal Magazine and available to order at The Essential Herbal web site from Tina Sams. It includes delightful fairy stories, recipes for favorite fairy treats, tips on designing the fairy garden, and even fairy garden crafts.
Reading that little book inspired me to revisit my own experiences with fairy gardens and so I wrote Fairy Garden Flowers for Faeries. It’s chock full of specific plant suggestions for designing and planting a fairy garden and includes my tips for entertaining and caring for your flower garden fairies (or faeries if you prefer that spelling.) If you enjoy theme gardens, this is a fun one to try. If you garden with children or if children visit your garden, be sure to ask them to help you. I promise they will love it. My daughter has just reminded me, for instance, how she had to build a fence of twigs to corral the snapdragons planted across the path from the fairy garden. Unbeknownst to me, they were not getting along and the fairies needed protection!
