ColorChoice Flowering Shrubs is touting a new, tiny weigela called "My Monet" for 2007. (Weigela florida "Verweig")
At only 12 to 18 inches tall and up to 24 inches wide, this shrub -- or should I say shrublet -- is an ideal size for planting in mixed borders and flower gardens. (ColorChoice also recommends it for ground cover uses and shrub borders as examples of its extreme versatility.)
The foliage on this plant is gorgeous. The coloring is a delicate mixture of cream, green and pink for all season interest. It is very striking when grown en masse, or as an accent surrounded by more subtle greens. It can also hold its own surrounded by colorful flowers.
This type of variegation tends to make foliage a bit tender in heat and full sun. So, this shrub is recommended for partial sun. (Full sun in the north.) In practical terms, this means morning sun rather than a half day of hot afternoon sun.
And yes, there are flowers: pink flowers in the spring. These have the typical weigela funnel shape.
This plant is listed as winter hardy in zones 4 through 9 and is described as needing little to no pruning.
For all the hoopla, there is one problem. It will not be available until spring 2007. So if you want one, pay attention and don't miss out!
