The American Hosta Society has designated certain gardens as worthy of being recognized as hosta display gardens. In these gardens you will see a well maintained collection of hostas where you can identify your own personal likes and dislikes and work on that "short list" of "must have" hostas.
I have never met a shade gardener who didn't find at least a few hostas they couldn't live without. With good reason: hostas come in a huge range of foliage sizes, shapes, colors and textures and are generally easy to grow, long lived perennials. Some even have fragrant flowers and yes, they attract hummingbirds.
Prices range from free (ask a friend for a division) through dirt cheap and inexpensive to reasonable to astronomical for new introductions.
Best of all, they grow in the shade so are perfect for visiting in the heat of late summer. So what are you waiting for? Here's the list of hosta display gardens (meant to "educate, stimulate and inspire") for the United States and Canada.
Enjoy!
