Here in Los Angeles where it is always sunny and never rains, seasonal weather changes are relatively subtle. But people here are setting out mums, so some fall gardening traditions are the same all over. And the light is different now, so I know it is fall.
We had an actual measurable rain the other day. This was a little confusing because it is more typical of winter weather. The downpour reminded me of the usual fall rain storms on the east coast and in the midwest, the kind that waters your reseeded lawn and transplants, settles your spring bulbs and jump starts their rooting.
For gardeners who "enjoy" a four season climate with cold winters, fall frost makes a lot of work in the garden if you grow tender plants. For instance, you might need to dig up cannas. If you have dahlias, you might need to dig up the dahlia tubers, too. And don't forget to lift those glads if you want to save them.... What else needs to be done now? How about planting bulbs like daffodils... or dividing and transplanting perennials?

And for those of you with those colossal mammoth sunflower towers ripening in the garden, make sure you are prepared to harvest those yummy sunflower seeds before the birds get them!
