I've been working on plant lists for several theme gardens, the kind of cute or clever theme gardens based on related plant names. Figuring out the plants to fit each theme is not easy. It is really time consuming once you get beyond the first ten that pop into your head.
If you know of an animal-named plant that begins with N please let me know ASAP. I checked around and got no help whatsoever. I mean, guess which animal the folks at Yellowstone listed for N. And their selection for X was a definite cheat! After today, I feel their pain.
Seriously, sometimes you just have to wonder about the folks who name new plants. As I combed through various catalogs I kept noticing new patterns for possible themes. For example, here's a doozy for a nice lush garden:
Achillea "Summer Wine"
Aquilegia "Tequila Sunrise"
Convalleria majalis "Bordeaux"
Echinacea "Vintage Wine"
Eschschotzia californica "Tequila Sunrise"
Hosta "Frozen Margarita"
Iris sibirica "Chilled Wine"
Miscanthus sinensis "Cosmopolitan"
Monarda "Raspberry Wine"
Papavar "Champagne Bubbles"
Penstemon "Pink Chablis"
Salvia nemerosa "Rose Wine"
I must say an entire day spent combing through plant lists is nearly enough to drive one to drink -- although I am already seeing double from all the fine print, thank you very much! :)
