This is a big challenging topic, so look for several articles on it beginning with today's Design With Confidence and then moving on to cover some basic design principles such as the bones of the garden; using scale, symmetry, repetition and balance; how to draw a garden plan; using colors; achieving all season bloom; and suggestions for using themes to bring focus and cohesiveness to your flower garden designs.
Eventually there will be articles presenting numerous design suggestions, tips and techniques in the Flower Gardens topic but not necessarily all in sequence. Here is an ongoing and ever lengthening list of all the Flower Gardening Articles so far so you can check for what's been added as time goes on.
It's spring -- the busiest hands-on gardening season of all. Sometime soon I need to write about how to plant, how to select plants that are right for your zone, and how to select plants that are suited to your planting site!
I want to inspire you to try your hand at experimenting with your flowers. If you are a beginner, just planting your first flower garden is enough of a leap of faith. If you are more experienced, I want to inspire you to try new plants and push the limits of your site.
Gardening is so much fun, or it should be. If you are having problems, let me know and I'll try to address them. If you are having success, let us know and we'll celebrate along with you!
Remember: there's no such thing as an ugly flower garden! Be brave! Design With Confidence
p.s. We'll look at perennials, annuals, and flower garden maintenance along the way, too. It's hard to talk about flower garden design and planting flower gardens without mentioning those!
