This year, in the USA we'll be celebrating National Arbor Day on April 28th. On the national scale, Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April.
Many states have set their own date for statewide Arbor Day. It usually falls somewhere between February and May. These state-specific dates reflect local planting conditions more precisely than the national date. For example, in Hawaii the date is in November!
Sometimes we become overly exuberant at the thought of spring time and tree planting and wanting to reforest the earth or bring beauty to our local town or get instant shade for our home. That spring air and the spring sunshine just bring green thoughts to the brain!
But trees are a long term investment. Done right, they will be valuable additions to the landscape and appreciated for generations to come. When you plant a tree, plan ahead so it can grow and develop to its full potential. Do a little research to identify trees that are well suited to the growing conditions at the site where you are planting. Always check out the mature size of the tree and make sure it will have ample space in the years and decades ahead as it grows. Then you can plant with confidence and look forward to many years of enjoyment and value from "your" cherished tree.
