Cool Springs Press released Proven Plants Southern Gardens by Erica Glasener in January 2010. This new book is a concise guide for gardeners growing plants in the southern United States. Gardeners will discover the plant choices made by Glasener have a hardiness range as far south as zones 9 and 10. She augments this selection with plants reliably grown only in hot, humid sometimes-swampy environment of the southeast. The chapters are labeled with the traditional plant categories: annuals, perennials, groundcovers, trees, shrubs and bulbs. The chapters are further divided by light tolerance and plant characteristics such as bloom times and seasonal interest. Ferns and roses have separate chapters. Glasener begins each section with her top 10 plant choices, adds 10 more ideas in a list form and adds garden vignettes between the sections. Right Plant Right Place Garden MaximGlasener acknowledges the drought trends experienced in recent years in the South, and then stresses the garden maxim, right plant right place. However, she adds to Proven Plants Southern Gardens many plants that thrive with waterlogged roots, as well. The container bog idea in this garden book uses pitcher plants, an excellent project especially for children. The plants-with-wet-feet list of trees and shrubs offers gardeners ideas for soils often swampy in the South. Trees and Shrubs Plant IdeasThe trees and shrubs sections are divided into spring and summer ideas. In addition, there are lists of plants for screening hedges, trees that have a weeping form and appropriate conifers for growing in southern gardens. In Proven Plants Southern Gardens, each plant description includes a uses-and- companion-plants paragraph. In the conifers section, cone bearing plants for container gardens and combining in mixed-plantings are recommended. Rose Plants in the SouthRose plants recommended by Glasener range from the popular Knockout® Rose to the tough shrub rose, Rosa rugosa. But in her collection, the Georgia author also includes the heritage climber, Rosa banksiae ‘Lutea.’ It is a rose bush hardy only in zones 7 – 9.
