Spring is an ideal time to start a garden and plant flowers. Since the hardiness zones differ for each region, May could be a cooler or warmer month depending on the location. However, there are several flowers that can be planted during this month that tend to grow well for most regions.
Petunias
As an annual, May is the perfect time to plant petunias since the danger of frost has passed. Although blooms wilt in extreme heat, petunias will usually bloom several times over the course of the summer. Plant petunias in partial shade if in a region known for extreme summer temperatures. Otherwise, plant them in full sun. When planting the seeds, pat into soil with good drainage rather than burying them.
Marigolds
Marigolds produce blooms in shades of gold, yellow and maroon. As with the petunias, marigolds are annuals and need to be planted after the danger of frost is over. Spread the seeds over warm and moist soil. It can take up to fifty days for marigolds to bloom, so starting the seeds indoors during March or April is an option. May would be time to carry them outdoors if taking this route. Marigolds have rounded, lace-like blooms that add alluring texture to a garden.
Begonias
Unlike petunias, begonias tolerate shade quite well. Red, white, yellow and pink blooms are available depending on the variety planted. Begonias are celebrated for their versatility in the garden and home, and their attractive leaves and showy blooms make them a favorite. Again, plant this flower in good draining soil by patting the seed into the ground. Once the flower has bloomed, maintain begonias by trimming back dead leaves and stems.
African Daisy
As its names suggests, the African daisy produces blooms similar to daisies. Colors range from white and blue to pink. Plant seeds into well draining moist soil with a small about of fertilizer to help encourage faster growth. Cut back old stems and leaves that are dying for better blooms. When mulching, do not cover up the soil directly under an African daisy. Although classified as a perennial, African daisies are very delicate and are frequently treated as an annual.
Lavender
A beautiful and fragrant flower, the Lavender has become a popular perennial in numerous gardens. Garden Guides suggest "if you have a warm, non-windy area that slopes to the south, lavender will thrive especially well. It prefers a light soil in a dry, open, sunny location. Soil that is too rich or full of nutrients will not make a good home for lavender". Lavender are difficult to start from seed due to their low germination, so purchasing young plants and cuttings is recommended. Plant in loose soil with good drainage. During the first year, cut back the flowers. The following years will result in bushy and full blooms.
Summer Flower Gardens
Planting a combination of the above flowers results in a blooming display during the hot days of summer. If planting all of these, either create cohesiveness with colors and shades that complement and match or design a pattern of interest by placing groups of like flowers together throughout the garden. Either way, planting seeds in May will result in beautiful summer blooms.
