Decorating the outside of one's home with hanging baskets is a great way to improve the homes curb appeal while simultaneously attracting desirable wildlife.

Depending upon what plants fill the hanging baskets, one may spend hours watching hummingbirds and butterflies pollinating the flowers and beautifying ones yard.

It is important to take care when deciding upon which flowers to plant in one’s hanging baskets because not all species are suited to live in that environment. This article will detail five plants which are best suited to thrive in the living environment of a hanging basket whether it be in full sun or partial shade.

Beautiful and Unscented Hanging Basket Flower Ideas:

Ivy Geranium: Ivy Geraniums are one of the prettiest flowers you can plant in your hanging basket because both their blossoms and foliage are attractive. Among the petite ivy shaped leaves sprouts clusters of deeply colored flowers that last the length of summer. Ivy Geraniums are available in a variety of colors and attract butterflies, dragonflies as well as the occasional hummingbird.

Fuchsia: Fuchsias are among the most popular hanging basket plants because they quickly spread throughout the planter and their blossoms spew over the sides of the basket. Requiring little more than a weekly watering; Fuchsia’s are well suited to live in a hanging basket. Their blossoms are brightly colored commonly bearing blossoms with a neon pink outside and deep purple inside.

Fragrant Choices to Plant in a Hanging Planter:

Begonia: Begonias are becoming more and more popularly used as a hanging basket plant because they are suited to live in the shady areas of your porch. Typically, one looks to plant sun-loving plants in hanging baskets because they are usually exposed to full sun. However, for those areas of your porch that is not blanketed by full sun, Begonias are the perfect plant to grow. Producing clusters of adorable blossoms of varied colors, the Begonia makes the perfect plant for your hanging basket.

Calibrachoa: Commonly referred to as “Million Bells” this sun-loving plant can populate a hanging basket alone or in conjunction with other species. This plant produces small clusters of blossoms that stand out beautifully against its petite leaves. Available in colors ranging from light pink, purple, violet, blue and brownish-orange the calibrachoa makes an excellent choice to accent your other hanging baskets.

Trailing Petunia: Trailing Petunias come in a variety of attractive colors and produce a mild sweet aroma. The blossoms will last all summer without demanding much attention from a gardening standpoint; requiring a light feeding and watering once every two weeks depending upon sun exposure. This plant looks great when combined with another trailing plant to create a stream of color and scent.
